After a year away drifting in the Outer Rim, the Star Wars television series returned with its second season and a compilation soundtrack, The Mandalorian: Season 2 - Vol. 1 (Chapters 9-12). Along with the titular bounty hunter and the pop culture phenomenon also known as Baby Yoda, composer Ludwig Göransson is back at the helm, expanding the ideas of what a Star Wars score can sound like beyond John Williams. Along with the signature Mandalorian theme, Göransson continues to inject fresh ideas into the universe, with electric guitar, booming horns, hip-hop beats, and any number of kitchen-sink bells and whistles. On this collection, notable moments include the riotous "Enjoy the Fights" and the dramatic "Tusken Raiders" from Chapter 9 ("The Marshal"), as well as "Get the Child," which employs tribal percussion reminiscent of Göransson's work on Black Panther. While "Beneath the Ice" offers chilly and spacious atmosphere to the mix, the blaring close of "Snacks" is as terror-inducing as the accompanying horror onscreen in the action-packed finale of Chapter 10 ("The Passenger"). Later, Chapter 11's "Reunited" and Chapter 12's "Back Together" offer sweet but brief moments of respite before Göransson pulls out the stops for the pulse-pounding duo of "Ship o hoj, Mandalorians!" and "Long Live the Empire." Much like the first half of this season, the score is a wild ride that pays off with each episode, expanding the Star Wars universe one planetary quest at a time.
